I needed something gingerbread flavored and I couldn’t wait any longer … so I started this day with this smoothie and it hits the spot! Today I’m sharing with you my favourite Chai Gingerbread Smoothie Recipe. A creamy, smooth, delicious, vegan, gluten-free smoothie made with hazelnut milk, bananas and spices combined together to taste just like gingerbread cookies. This healthy chocolatey gingerbread smoothie gets in me the holiday spirit (I know a bit early but … who’s care) it’s literally Christmas in a glass;) It’s so easy, quick, full of healthy ingredients and always turns out great. So good, if you’re looking for a new smoothie to try out, say hello to your new favorite! Taste awesome as a dessert but are equally delicious as a morning smoothie.
Ingredients for Chai Spice:
1 tsp ground ginger
1+1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 tsp all spice
1/8 tsp ground anise
1/8 tsp white pepper
Mix together all the ingredients, transfer to a glass jar with a tight fitting lid.
Ingredients for smoothie:
1 frozen banana
1+ 1/2 cup hazelnut milk, homemade preferred
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 heaped tsp nut butter, homemade preferred
seeds of 1/4 vanilla bean
2 tbsp ground flax seeds
2 tbsp rolled oats
1 tsp chai mix
1/2 tsp lucuma powder
one small handful of ice
*additional sweetener, if needed (1 tbsp organic, unsulphured blackstrap molasses or coconut nectar)
The flavors in this smoothie will remind your favorite cookie in drink form. When it comes to sweetening I highly recommend to use molasses. If you’ve ever had gingerbread cookies you know that without molasses, just wouldn’t be the same. The molasses, cacao powder, nuts and spices pair heavenly with the creamy hazelnut milk, creating a gorgeous healthy and filling drink.
Unlike some other sweeteners, such as white sugar, molasses offers nutritional value in the form of essential minerals and trace amounts of vitamins (a powerhouse of iron and other nutrients; calcium, potassium, Vitamin B6, magnesium, copper and more) but it’s still high in calories so consume it in moderation. A tablespoon of molasses contains 58 calories, with all of the calories coming from carbohydrates.
